Mainland Takes the Win at DeLand’s March Madness Scholastic Chess Tournament

DeLand, Florida – by Dan Friend
Mainland High School Senior John Moore was named Top Dawg and overall winner at the 1st Annual Scholastic Chess Tournament held in Deland on Saturday, March 28th. Thirty Volusia County chess players descended on the town and played in a chess marathon; their very own March Madness!
DeLand High School hosted the event in the hope that it will be an annual affair for all local chess players. Teams from both sides of the county played up to 9 rounds of chess over the day to determine team and individual awards. The overall best player at the end of the day was named “Top Dawg” in honor of the DeLand Bull Dogs.
Students who play chess consistently show better academic skills in a variety of areas. Sponsors of the event are working to insure every school in Volusia has either a chess club, or a class which offers beginning chess to all students.
