Cross Country

Girls Cross Country Coach: Laura Kieselbach
Boy's Cross Country Coach: Max Saylor

The girls cross country teams has several t-shirts left over from their season and it would be great if we could sell these.  It would also be great to see staff in our t-shirts – it would make the girls feel good.  There aren’t many left but if you are interested, you can click the link to see a proof.  The saying on the back is not there on these shirts but the XC front is.  The t-shirt itself is light grey and can be bought for $12.  I have a few mediums and large, that’s all.  Let me know if you are interested – first come, first served

The boys and girls cross country teams of Mainland High School spend many days in the sun preparing for the season. Cross country is a sport of endurance and it takes time to get good at it. Many runners feel discouraged when they cannot complete a mile without breaking but really it is okay. This sport is one of dedication and perserverance. We start the season with mild, easy runs and progressively work our way to the end goal: running a 5K race in a competitive atmosphere. Many of our meets are with local schools and some are even on the beach. We also travel to several invitationals where we have the opportunity to race against schools from a broader region throughout Florida. When competing, the girls and boys run separately and often there is a varsity and a junior varsity race. All runners are amassed at the starting line, each school being assigned its own box and each runner their own number. Starting as a large group gives the stronger runners a chance to compete for their spot and the weaker runners to set a goal. Everyone is a welcome member of cross country. It is an excellent way to train for any other sport that requires endurance and a great way to stay in shape.

We invite you to start training now...the girls and boys running club is underway and sets out every Tuesday and Thursday for a mild run. It is a great opportunity to pace yourself and make progress; there is no competition on the line. It is ideal that any one interested in running continue their work outs over the summer in order to be best prepared for the start of practice in the fall. It is suggested that you spend about 5 days a week working on cardiovascular training. See Coach Kieselbach or Coach Saylor for additional information.

Come on out and join the fun...it's the toughest sport you'll ever love!
