The Academy of Science and Medicine
Mainland High School offers a special Academy for students with career interests that require a high level of knowledge in science and mathematics. This school-within-a-school integrates language arts, technology, sciences, vocational exploration, and research into a rigorous academic program. Students enrolled in the program will complete eight science courses, five mathematics courses, and two foreign language courses. Students conduct research by gathering and analyzing data and by conducting frequent laboratory experiments. Field studies, job shadowing, and internships will enrich classroom experiences. Students will be expected to select electives directly related to their career interests.
This prestigious program includes Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Science; all available at the regular, honors, and advanced placement levels. Highlights of our curriculum include:
- Biology for the 21st century with an emphasis on molecular biology, DNA technology, and ecology. Students actively learn gel electrophoresis, scientific imaging, and image processing.
- Chemistry is a lab-based course in which data collected is used as a basis for formula writing, stoichiometry, acid-based and solution chemistry and gas laws.
- Physics classes are entirely web-based allowing students to access to materials via computer at home and school. Students compete in the Physics Olympics annually at DBCC, use computer-interfaced Personal Science Lab (PSL) probeware in labs, and digital video analysis labs.
- Environmental Science includes a study of pollution, conservation, environmental planning and policy, public land usage, population dynamics and major forms of energy through classroom discussion, labs, and field studies.
Several national and local partnerships support student learning. In cooperation with the St. John’s River Water Management District, Volusia County Parks and Recreation, the Volusia County Department of Environmental Management, and support from the Legacy grant, Mainland has been given a 33 acre tract of land on Rose Bay to study and develop into a low impact recreational area. Students have been studying the ecologically fragile area for several years and have begun planning for the long-term protection of the area. A major goal of the program is to involve students in real-world math, science, and writing in order to support the School-To-Work efforts at Mainland and to increase test scores in these areas. Students interview and shadow scientists, naturalists, photographers, engineers, and many other community volunteers. Medical and health related field experiences are available through partnerships with local hospitals, the local medical community, and Daytona Beach Community College. We are very proud of our partnerships with the local medical community.
The Academy of Science and Medicine is more than a selected group of students and a prescribed curriculum. Our academy provides opportunities for students to develop leadership skills, explore multiple career avenues, assess community opportunities, accumulate college credit and experience, and diversify their academic profile. Students participate in social activities such as the Health Club, Chemistry Club, Environmental Club, field trips, learning lectures, Rose Bay, and much more.
